Cardano Overlord Charles Hoskinson has gone so far as to say that Ethereum will ‘die’ in the long term. He raises alarm over its technological decisions and governance framework. Hoskinson claims that Ethereum is having a hard time keeping up with the recent developments in the recent world of blockchain technology. He lists design flaws and a top-down leadership as key hindrances to its eventual prosperity. He even goes as far as to predict that Ethereum will not make it past the next 10-15 years.
Concerns Over Protocol and Consensus
Hoskinson has long been critical of Ethereum’s direction with their protocol choice and consensus model, arguing they are not sustainable enough to survive in the long run. He’s suggested a phased move away from the existing Proof-of-Stake (POS) protocol. Hoskinson has proposed looking at other alternatives such as the Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPOS) model employed by the Sui network. Hoskinson argues that Ethereum’s outsized commitment to its existing architecture will be disastrous in the long run.
Hoskinson further highlighted the increasing adoption of layer 2 scaling solutions. He highlighted the negative impact of cost-cutting economics on the Ethereum ecosystem. He contended that these actions, meant to promote greater performance goals and national security, have resulted in new burdens and complications.
Governance and Leadership
Much of Hoskinson’s ire seems to be focused on Ethereum’s lack of governance model. He dismissed it as a "dictatorship" ruled by Vitalik Buterin. In opposition to this, Hoskinson describes Cardano’s approach as an alternative that properly addresses the consensus model. He went on to stress the need for decentralized governance as a means of ensuring long-term health and adaptability of a blockchain network.
Cardano as an Alternative
Hoskinson claimed that Cardano has fixed every error that the developers of the Ethereum network did. He cited Cardano’s radical technological innovations and participatory society-based governance structure as proof of its superior design. Hoskinson further argued that innovations from challenger networks such as Solana and Sui would continue to erode Ethereum’s dominance. These changes together, in his view, represent a very real threat to Ethereum’s long-term sustainability.
